We had a yummy dinner at Blue Lemon in Holladay, minus Linda. This YA novel was chosen by Leslie and some of us went on to read the second in the trilogy, as well.  The final book is due out in October so we're prepared for it. It was great to get caught up on everyone's summer doings and lend emotional support for various crises.  That's what friends are for......

The book got a solid 4 stars from us.

Alison said: Maybe I was just in the mood for a romantic dystopian adventure - but this certainly filled the bill! 

Leslie said: The idea of the five factions was an interesting world, as each group tried to make the world better by eradicating one of the traits they felt was responsible for the destruction of their previous world.

Sue said: Overall, it's a fun read with plenty of action, a little romance, lots of conspiracy, and some strange characters.

Natalie said: Fun book!

Red Glass, by Laura Resau

We gave this a solid 4 stars and had a great discussion.  

Karen said, "I really enjoyed this YA novel as it describes Sophie, a anxious teen, and her journey to Mexico. I loved all the characters, especially Dika, the Bosnian war survivor full of personality. The novel is amazingly multicultural, without feeling forced. The story deals with illegal immigration, guerrilla warfare, violence, family, love and loss in a very human way. Excellent novel."

Sue said, "Beautiful writing tells the tale of a teen with anxiety who learns that she can be strong. It's told within the context of illegal immigration, survivors of war and guerrilla activity, love for others who are different from yourself, and has some strong symbols of things people cling to when their world is shattered. Great read."

December 2011

December's book was Wonderstruck and although only three of us were able to get together for a lovely lunch, and only one of us had read it, we had a wonderful time.  We plan to discuss it in January along with our new book.
